DEVELOPMENT OF STUDENTS’ INDEPENDENCE AND INITIATIVE IN THE PROCESS OF HIGHER EDUCATION LEARNING

Abstract

The article presents a comprehensive theoretical framework for understanding the mechanisms that foster students' independence and initiative in higher education institutions, which are crucial in the context of personality-oriented higher education. The theoretical and methodological analysis revealed that autonomy and initiative are interrelated key personality traits of students that ensure their active participation in the educational process, responsibility for learning outcomes, and readiness for self-fulfillment in professional activity. These qualities are shaped by a combination of internal and external factors, which necessitate the creation of appropriate psychological and pedagogical conditions in higher education institutions. The most effective modern approaches to their development are the learner-centered, activity-based, and competence-based approaches. Together, they help build an educational environment conducive to the development of autonomous and proactive student behavior. Recognizing the role of these qualities in higher education opens up opportunities to improve the educational process by considering individual trajectories of students’ professional formation. The key directions for enhancing the effectiveness of the educational process in relation to the development of autonomy and initiative include: integrating elements of independent choice into the learning process; involving students in co-designing educational modules and courses; developing a reflective culture; implementing growth-oriented assessment; using digital platforms for independent work, where the digital environment provides broad opportunities for individualized learning. Prospects for further research include empirical studies on the effectiveness of implementing the aforementioned psychological and pedagogical conditions in higher education practice, the development of diagnostic tools to assess the level of students’ autonomy and initiative, and an examination of the dynamics of these qualities in blended and distance learning environments.
